5 Basic On Page SEO Factors that WILL affect your rankings!

meta-tags5 Simple guidelines that will help your on page SEO.  With the recent Penguin update these factors have only become more important than before.  Everybody knows not to use use duplicate content.  Duplicate content includes the Page Title and Meta Description, not just the text on the page.  There are many free tools available online to help check these factors very quickly.  With Joomla websites we use some of these tools as well as Joomla components that allow you to change your titles and meta tags on the front end.   The following recommendations fall within Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

1) Is every page URL in your site search engine friendly ?

Good Example : http://www.destinyg.com/web/website-packages
Bad Example : http://www.destinyg.com/index.php?option=com_content&;view=article&id=89&Itemid=509

2) META Title Tag - Should be Unique and Relevant to the page and limited to 70 Characters.  Anything over 150 characters may be truncated and not appear in a search engine result.

3) META Description Tag - Should be Unique and Relevant to the page and limited to 150 Characters.  Anything over 150 characters may be truncated and not appear in a search engine result.  90% of the time this “Description” is what will be displayed when your website is found in a search.  This is your “marketing message” for that invidual page!

4) META Keywords - Should be Focused / Relevant to the page AND limited to 10 keyword phrases - anything over 10 may be ignored by search engines and considered keyword stuffing.

5) Internal/External Links - Should be less than 100 per page.  Excessive links on any given page may lower the page “score” for ranking.  See the Penguin Update blog for an explanation.

Google Penguin Update - What to Know

Google released the Penguin Update on April 24th which is aimed to combat "spammy" web pages. If your site is over optimized it may be affected by this update. The update addresses website content & back links:

GooglePenguinContent: Each individual page must be Unique and Duplicate Content across your pages should be avoided at all costs. Keyword stuffing & keyword cloaking will result in penalties and lower rankings. When you look at (read) any page in your site, does it sound 'natural' or is the same information repeated with slight variation? Is ALL of the content on your page about one specific topic or "keyword phrase" ? As an example we always tell clients to make their blogs very focused on one subject/topic because each blog entry is a single page in the eyes of search engines - each blog has its own url. This is why properly structured blogs rank so well and generally very quickly. By making each individual page in your site about one topic/subject/keyword phrase you are not only making it easy for a site visitor to know what the page is about, you are making it easy for SEARCH ENGINES to know what the page is about and you will be ranked accordingly. The goal has been and will always be: Readable, Quality, Focused Content.

Backlinks: Anchor Text vs. Link Source : The penguin update appears to be assigning more "Quality" to the Link Source as opposed to the Anchor Text and for good reason. It has always been relatively easy to manipulate the anchor text of a link, which until now has always been an important factor in Ranking Results(SERP). With todays technology it is easier to determine the "Quality" and "Relevance" of a site that a link originates from. It is more difficult to manipulate the source of al link so more WEIGHT is being given to Link Source vs Anchor Text. Many Link Building companies will continue to come with creative ways to get around this latest update and will often get results - until the next update. You can take the rollercoaster route OR you can simply go after Quality Link Sources , ideally within your niche. One of the best places to find these links is your top ranking competitors. If your competitor has better ranking for a given keyword, chances are they have more QUALITY links than you do. Reverse engineering competitors linking strategies has been a tried and true technique for years and this will not change any time soon.

How can you tell if your site took a "hit" ? By looking at your "Search" traffic between April 15 and April 30th. If there is a drop of more than 20%, chances are good that your site needs to be adjusted. If you are an SEO client, we are already evaluating your site through analytics and webmasters to see if any adjustments need to be made. Over the past 30 days we have also been updating the following for all SEO clients : Page Titles, Meta Description, Meta Tags. This was done in anticipation of the Penguin Update. If you have any questions or concerns about your website and the recent Google update please contact us.

Creative Intelligence "creates" Amazing Results

leftright

"You were born an original.  Don't die a copy" - John Mason

We could say that being creative is just finding something different when everyone else sees the same old thing. It's like lighting a candle when it's dark.

Being creative does not necessarily mean to be an inventor or a celebrity, it has more to do with overcoming the most adverse situations with creativity.

It also means to have dreams, which is where real change comes from.

Time for being creative

Creativity is a skill that can be developed at any time by anybody. You can do it while performing even routine and simple activities, you just need to exercise it.

The mental process of creating is performed as follows:

The left hemisphere of your brain, sorts, classifies and analyzes the logical, casual and relational information

The right hemisphere processes ideas when they are originated, feelings and intentions. Here is where new potential ideas are created. These potential ideas must be processed and organized by the left hemisphere; otherwise it will be only potential ideas.

Creative people can establish a relationship between idea and action, between knowledge and intuition, between the planned and the unexpected. Creative people make both hemispheres "talk" to each other.

Create Yourself

Being creative is not a talent, it is a skill that can be trained and developed.  This ability begins with your belief that you can be creative.  "I want to become CREATIVE" must be your attitude!

Explore your Curiosity

There are many things or situations in your life that you do not pay attention to or bother to see. But when you look at these things or situations, or you stop to see them in depth, you allow the "attitude of curiosity" to  appear.

Curiosity is a magic key that opens the doors of creativity. From each situation we can ask the questions, How?, Where?, Why?, What?, When? ...  Answering these questions and looking for more questions will lead us to the "Can we improve it?" question.  While curiosity remains, there is a possibility to learn, to investigate, to reach different answers that might open the possibility of different actions and therefore different results.

Perseverance to Discover

How many times in your life do you find yourself making excuses to stop fighting for what you desire? Persistence is necessary and crucial when pursuing your dreams.

A reporter asked Thomas Edison how he had overcome the frustration of having been through over nine hundred failures before inventing the light bulb. Edison replied that he had not failed even once, that he simply went through a process of nine hundred and one steps to invent the light bulb.

Make the Decision Today

The purpose of being creative is to find something that is in front of you, that you can not yet see.  It is having the courage to play, like when you were a child.  It is finding your dreams and pursuing them!

If you don't do it now ... then when?

Make the choice to be creative, to ask questions, to be persistent EVERY DAY and the path to your dreams will unfold beneath your feet.

Joomla vs Wordpress - Making The Right Choice

Quick Intro to Joomlajoomla vs_wordpress

Joomla is a content management system that makes building beautiful, content-rich, and powerful websites for small and medium-sized businesses a lot easier than it would have otherwise been using old systems like Adobe Dreamweaver. The best part is that it's features can be extended with the use of appropriate extensions to create any type of website imaginable. It is easy to use, free, and has a large expanding community of developers and users.

Wordpress as a CMS

There are other applications in the CMS space that contend with Joomla in several aspects - the most popular being Wordpress. Wordpress - built initially as a blog publishing tool - has now developed into what could be called a micro-cms. The very same reason why it isn't suitable for large applications and business sites. It is not fit to handle such sites because the main idea behind it's development is contrary to that - a quick tool to get your words out - although plugins have made it possible to use it like a CMS, it does not have the same level of functionality and power that you will find with the latest version of Joomla.

Why Joomla Does The Job Better - Created as a CMS Right From The Start

There is a reason why popular and corporate websites prefer Joomla over Wordpress. By simply following their thoughts which led to the eventual creation of their site on the Joomla platform, one could conclude that they deemed Joomla fit and powerful enough to handle a website like theirs because it possesses all the features which Wordpress probably lacks.  Updating a Joomla website is intuitive and has a small learning curve.  Some corporations using Joomla for their websites are: Harvard University, Ihop Chain, and MTV Networks Quizilla. Joomla can power all types of websites regardless of their size.

Powerful Extensions

What web designers and webmasters can do with Joomla is only limited by their imagination. A lot of free and paid extensions are already available to add any feature required to create any type of website. With over 9000 extensions in the Joomla extensions directory, this only goes further to prove the point. Extensions spread over different categories and custom extensions can be developed. An example of a Joomla extension is the Custom CSS Module which can be used to give unique styles to individual pages different from other pages on the site. Joomla extensions can do much more than wordpress plugins.

A Growing Community
At any given time, there are well over 200,000 community users and contributors. The community helps with the development of new extensions, features, fixing and solving problems and more. The forum is active and ongoing developments are being made all the time to ensure that Joomla continues to meet the needs of it's users.

Usage and Updates

Joomla is easy to use even for beginners. It is updated regularly to improve it's performance and fix bugs, if any. The latest version released was 2.5.2. With Joomla, there is no need to worry about security issues, unlike Wordpress sites which are sometimes prone to hacking.
Joomla can power standard sites, intranets, shopping carts, etc. It doesn't come as a surprise that it was nominated the best open source content management system in 2011. While some business websites will do fine with Wordpress, Joomla is clearly the perfect choice. Not to mention, websites built with Joomla generally look better than Wordpress websites.

Times of Crisis

In times of crisis, it seems obvious that we should forget about so-called luxuries to save money, take care of our expenses, buy only what we need and think more carefully about the choices we make.

While sensible at first glance, all of this creates a state of mind in which we operate with the assumption that there's not enough for everyone and that we have to share what little we do have. We call this a "lack context." We live with the feeling that we will never get anything we want and that we are forced to defend what's ours. From this context, we end up receiving less and less, when we wanted to get more and more, causing us to work harder and harder.

Eventually, we begin to ask ourselves: How are we going to get out of this? What can we do differently? When will this crisis end?

These questions help us look at the actions we can take to achieve different results. The approach suggested by Ontological Coaching encourages us to look beyond our actions and focus on understanding how we are seeing and talking about ourselves. From this broad point of view, we can generate new thoughts that allow us to live in a "context of abundance" where crisis is an opportunity to start looking outward, leaving aside our selfishness and putting our focus on growing a community and joining forces with others to create synergy.

As a means of taking responsibility for our success and that of our community, Destiny Consulting is implementing this concept through our free Coaching Workshops, dedicating ourselves to sharing the tools that help people generate growth in their businesses, and to carry their successes forward to benefit their communities.

JOOMLA WINS THE PACKT OPEN SOURCE CMS AWARD

Joomla has won the Packt Publishing award for the top open source CMS.

Now in its sixth year, many consider the Packt Open Source Award as a top honor for an open source project. Joomla won the award based on a combination of public voting and input by a panel of judges consisting of open source luminaries.

Julian Copes of Packt Publishing said:

“Although around since 2005, Joomla really reinvented itself this year with the introduction of Joomla 1.6 and 1.7, the first product releases for the CMS since 2008. Furthermore, Joomla realized dramatic growth this year as evidenced by its number of downloads and documented government sites powered by Joomla. We are proud to honor Joomla with its third Packt Open Source Award since we launched it six years ago.”

Joomla previously won the same award, the Packt Open Source CMS Award, in 2006 and also won the Packt Best PHP Open Source CMS Award 2007. Some of the milestones the open source CMS reached this year that contributed to it winning the Packt award include:

  • Joomla surpassed 26 million downloads. Although it launched in 2005, this number is only from 2007 to the present since that is when Joomla began documenting downloads.
  • It documented more than 2,900 government sites worldwide powered by Joomla. These include the U.S. Central Command, U.K. Ministry of Defense and many more.
  • Info-Tech Research recently confirmed Joomla powers more than 1.5 million websites. These include Citibank, eBay, General Electric and many more.

Ryan Ozimek, president of Open Source Matters, the not-for-profit created to provide organizational, legal and financial support to the Joomla project, said:

“Joomla’s documented growth over the past year is a bi-product of our broad, diverse community spanning hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The people and open source experts have spoken with this award and we are honored that they have acknowledged what all of these people in our community passionately believe — Joomla is the absolutely best platform to power websites, Intranets and blogs.”
