Beware of third-party vendors marking up your Google AdWords clicks

adwords

When you first start to promote your company's website, you can have a third party set up your ad words campaign. It's very easy and hassle free to begin with, but you may overlook the fact that it could cost substantially more.

Since you have no direct access to pay per click campaign when you are using a third party, it can result in up charges and additional fees. You HAVE to have access to your AdWords Campaign if you want to make sure that you are not overpaying. This can easily be accomplished by using Google AdWords.

One of our new clients recently took over her own AdWords Campaign and saved about 75% per click. Originally she was paying an average of $5 per click and now, since she has taken control of her own Google AdWords campaign, she is only paying an average of 88¢.

It is still okay, and recommended, to use a pay per click consultant or a company that has experience with Google AdWords campaigns, but make sure you have direct access to your campaign so you are not overpaying!

Twitter Basics

Although there are many places to learn about Twitter online we suggest starting with Twitter’s Guidelines at https://support.twitter.com/groups/31-twitter-basics#topic_114

Twitter Etiquette

Twitter has fast become a platform for businesses to share information, promote their brands, and establish thought leadership within their industry. But with 200 million tweets being sent out into the Twittersphere daily, it’s imperative that you strictly follow Twitter etiquette to avoid a faux pas that can alienate your customers and colleagues. Here are our top 10 tips to keep you popular on the Twitter playground.

1. Mind Your Manners

If someone mentions you or retweets your post, thank them. People like to be recognized for their efforts. Plus, it’s a great way to begin a Twitter relationship. This small gesture may open the lines of communication between you and a potential customer or business partner. Even better, return the favor and retweet one of their posts.

2. Resist the Urge to Tweet Too Much

Research has shown that there is a fine line between just enough sharing and too much. Don’t clog your followers‘ feeds with spam-like tweets. Remember that the best way to engage your audience is to post useful, interesting, relevant, and original content. Before you post, ask yourself: “If I was a follower, would I care about this?”

3. Use #Hashtags Appropriately

Hashtags are a great way to encourage participation and help others track and find information. But don’t over use them. Putting a hashtag in front of every word of your post will do nothing more than annoy your followers.

4. Watch What You Tweet

There have been some famous and embarrassing blunders on social media that have gotten individuals and even entire companies in a lot of trouble. Don’t use your brand’s Twitter account to discuss controversial topics, send inappropriate photos, or use explicit language.

5. Don’t Get Too Personal

Although developing relationships with customers is one the primary goals of Twitter, try to keep your posts about relevant business information. Your followers don’t need to know your personal business. However, if you’re getting married or a favorite employee just had a baby, you may want to share the news for your brand loyalists to celebrate with you. Carefully consider what is appropriate to share.

6. Write Professionally

Remember: your social media presence is an extension of your business persona. Proper grammar and spelling helps you maintain a professional image. (No one wants to see a law firm or accountant office tweet “OMG! Its not 2 late 4 u to file ur taxes!”). Be sure to use proper forms of commonly misused words like there, they’re, and their.

7. Be Aware of Your Audience

Tailor your content to fit your audience. If your brand is focusing on tweens and teens, speak their lingo. If you are a B2B company, consider using industry jargon. Be sure to post information that is relevant and timely to those following you and those you want to follow you.

8. Be Timely With Communication

If you’ve started a conversation with someone on Twitter, respond to them in a timely manner. More importantly, if someone poses a question to you, answer them! Social media is great for giving you an opportunity to engage immediately and directly with your consumer base.

9. Address Customer Service Issues Privately

Almost any customer who tweets you with a complaint or concern wants to be heard, but not all want to engage in a public dialogue. Directly address consumers through direct message, off the public “floor.”

10. Warn Followers if You’re Going to Tweet A Lot

So you want to live-tweet your product launch or charity run. That’s a nice idea, but you may lose more followers who feel assaulted by a barrage of tweets. A little fair warning will be much appreciated, and your followers will likely give you a pass for the day. Twitter is one of the most effective marketing tools of the last decade. Follow these rules, and you’re sure to have many happy tweets ahead of you.

5 Basic On Page SEO Factors that WILL affect your rankings!

meta-tags5 Simple guidelines that will help your on page SEO.  With the recent Penguin update these factors have only become more important than before.  Everybody knows not to use use duplicate content.  Duplicate content includes the Page Title and Meta Description, not just the text on the page.  There are many free tools available online to help check these factors very quickly.  With Joomla websites we use some of these tools as well as Joomla components that allow you to change your titles and meta tags on the front end.   The following recommendations fall within Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

1) Is every page URL in your site search engine friendly ?

Good Example : http://www.destinyg.com/web/website-packages
Bad Example : http://www.destinyg.com/index.php?option=com_content&;view=article&id=89&Itemid=509

2) META Title Tag - Should be Unique and Relevant to the page and limited to 70 Characters.  Anything over 150 characters may be truncated and not appear in a search engine result.

3) META Description Tag - Should be Unique and Relevant to the page and limited to 150 Characters.  Anything over 150 characters may be truncated and not appear in a search engine result.  90% of the time this “Description” is what will be displayed when your website is found in a search.  This is your “marketing message” for that invidual page!

4) META Keywords - Should be Focused / Relevant to the page AND limited to 10 keyword phrases - anything over 10 may be ignored by search engines and considered keyword stuffing.

5) Internal/External Links - Should be less than 100 per page.  Excessive links on any given page may lower the page “score” for ranking.  See the Penguin Update blog for an explanation.

Google Penguin Update - What to Know

Google released the Penguin Update on April 24th which is aimed to combat "spammy" web pages. If your site is over optimized it may be affected by this update. The update addresses website content & back links:

GooglePenguinContent: Each individual page must be Unique and Duplicate Content across your pages should be avoided at all costs. Keyword stuffing & keyword cloaking will result in penalties and lower rankings. When you look at (read) any page in your site, does it sound 'natural' or is the same information repeated with slight variation? Is ALL of the content on your page about one specific topic or "keyword phrase" ? As an example we always tell clients to make their blogs very focused on one subject/topic because each blog entry is a single page in the eyes of search engines - each blog has its own url. This is why properly structured blogs rank so well and generally very quickly. By making each individual page in your site about one topic/subject/keyword phrase you are not only making it easy for a site visitor to know what the page is about, you are making it easy for SEARCH ENGINES to know what the page is about and you will be ranked accordingly. The goal has been and will always be: Readable, Quality, Focused Content.

Backlinks: Anchor Text vs. Link Source : The penguin update appears to be assigning more "Quality" to the Link Source as opposed to the Anchor Text and for good reason. It has always been relatively easy to manipulate the anchor text of a link, which until now has always been an important factor in Ranking Results(SERP). With todays technology it is easier to determine the "Quality" and "Relevance" of a site that a link originates from. It is more difficult to manipulate the source of al link so more WEIGHT is being given to Link Source vs Anchor Text. Many Link Building companies will continue to come with creative ways to get around this latest update and will often get results - until the next update. You can take the rollercoaster route OR you can simply go after Quality Link Sources , ideally within your niche. One of the best places to find these links is your top ranking competitors. If your competitor has better ranking for a given keyword, chances are they have more QUALITY links than you do. Reverse engineering competitors linking strategies has been a tried and true technique for years and this will not change any time soon.

How can you tell if your site took a "hit" ? By looking at your "Search" traffic between April 15 and April 30th. If there is a drop of more than 20%, chances are good that your site needs to be adjusted. If you are an SEO client, we are already evaluating your site through analytics and webmasters to see if any adjustments need to be made. Over the past 30 days we have also been updating the following for all SEO clients : Page Titles, Meta Description, Meta Tags. This was done in anticipation of the Penguin Update. If you have any questions or concerns about your website and the recent Google update please contact us.
